Erectile dysfunction is more commonly known as male impotence, or a male being unable to gain and maintain an erection. It is a sexual dysfunction which affects the lives and sexual activity of hundreds of thousands of men worldwide. Once a social taboo, it is now widely discussed and help is at hand, not to mention the vast array of advice, information and different treatments, both physiological and psychological. There are various underlying causes to erectile dysfunction which differ in every man. Some physical causes include diabetes, nerve trauma or things like cardiovascular leakage. These all sound very daunting and complicated, but are often treatable.
Often in society, the image of the manly stud prevails, with high sexual activity and prowess, tied in with notions of success, masculinity and so on. Silly as it sounds, but this is what society has constructed around the sexually active male. So when erectile dysfunction occurs, the opposite to this ‘manly’ image, various feeling come into play and men very often feel shame, loss of confidence, inadequate, and other such feelings at not being able to perform and conform to this image or stereotype.
Actually, it is estimated that around 10% of men have erectile dysfunction/ impotence problems at some point, and often recurring problems throughout the course of their lives. Erectile dysfunction is incredibly common and millions of men suffer from it worldwide. You don’t have to suffer this curse alone, and it is not permanent- help is at hand
